How To Set Up Merchant Account Sales Facilities On Your Website
Merchant account sales can be handle through a combination of shopping cart software, a gateway provider, and the merchant account itself. If you set up a system such as this, you will be able to accept every kind of credit and debit card payment on your website, without the need to use expensive third party services. You can still include these services as options, because they are popular with sections of the buying public, but the choice will be entirely yours. Having your own merchant facilities does project a professional image.
If you are just starting out in business, you may well find it impossible to get a merchant account from your bank. Often, this is not the best option anyway. Some banks still regard online commerce as high risk, and charge significant premiums for the use of their facilities. Even if you could qualify for a bank merchant account, you are often better advised to approach a specialist provider. These providers are used to working with Internet based business, and they will even have experience of working with businesses who fall into a high risk category.
Banks are often extremely reluctant to offer merchant account sales facilities to businesses which fall into categories traditionally perceived as being high risk. Adult businesses, pharmacies, gambling businesses, all have a higher than average rate of problems caused by fraudulent transactions and chargebacks. They represent a greater risk to the banks, and often this is a risk they are not prepared to assume. This has created a gap in the market which specialist providers have only been too happy to fill.
Although you will be charged a higher fee for operating in a high risk area, these fees are less than you might expect. They are not excessive even for businesses which cannot satisfy the requirements for a full merchant account. In this case, you will usually be offered a third party service which will still get your business up and running. This will allow you to build your reputation over time, and when your business reaches a certain level of turnover you will be given the chance to upgrade to a full merchant account.
You can also accept merchant account sales through third party services such as PayPal, 2Checkout and ClickBank, depending on your location and the types of product you will be selling. All of these third party processors have high fees, but they do save you the trouble of having to deal directly with merchant account providers. ClickBank is restricted to digital products, and only pays out your earnings once a month. PayPal is very restrictive if you live in certain parts of the world. 2Checkout is far friendlier to overseas clients, but it does ask for a set up fee. All of these processors can be used to quickly set up facilities for merchant account sales.
